Salary: £28K-£33K dependent on experience

Hours: 37.5 hours a week, Monday to Friday

Love books? Always dreamt of running a bookshop? We may have the perfect job…

Peters is the leading supplier of children’s books to schools and libraries in the UK. Our bookshop in central Birmingham has the largest range of children’s books in the UK with over 30,000 individual titles in stock. In addition to visitors coming to the bookshop to select stock we also use it as a warehouse to fulfil customer orders and to create our book packs.

We are looking to recruit someone with an interest in books and a commitment to understanding and improving the processes around their supply. The successful candidate will report into the Commercial Director and work with our Operations Manager and buying team to support our order fulfilment processes. They will take line management responsibility for:

  • Ensuring that stock is quickly and accurately shelved
  • The picking of orders from the shelves
  • Coordinating the creation and supply of book packs
  • Organising returns to publisher
  • Project management of the supply of orders with non-standard requirements including liaising with partners, publishers and key stakeholders
  • Staffing the enquiries desk and ensuring that retail customers have a positive experience when visiting

The post holder will:

  • Have a key leadership role within the business
  • Determine staffing levels relative to the volume of business and recruit, train and mentor staff
  • Proactively work on reducing lead times and improving efficiencies within each of the functions that they manage
  • Work to organise the bookshop so that it works efficiently as a warehouse for our online business while also supporting direct retail sales from customers

Any of the following will be advantageous:

  • An organised approach with an interest in process and process improvement
  • Good IT skills, especially Excel
  • Previous management or supervisory experience
  • Experience either within a warehouse environment, a bookshop environment, or in an organisational capacity within a school or library environment

Peters is a small but growing business and the post holder would therefore be expected and encouraged to work collaboratively across other key functions of the business, including, buying, sales and marketing, website development, customer services etc. Career progression is available in each of these areas depending on the skill set and appetite of the successful candidate.

Please apply in writing enclosing a covering letter and CV to richard.butler@peters.co.uk explaining your job history and why you feel you would be a good fit for the role.
