Did you know that fewer than 2% of students at GCSE study a book by a writer of colour?
We're pleased to be supporting Penguin's Lit in Colour campaign, which aims to increase students’ access to more books by writers of colour, and has been supporting schools to make the teaching and learning of English literature more inclusive.
Alongside The Runnymede Trust, Penguin commissioned the 'Diversity in Literature in English Schools' report in 2021, which found that there are still a number of obstacles to teaching more diverse texts in schools, including lack of time, overstretched budgets, limited teacher confidence and subject knowledge.

Since 2020, the Lit in Colour campaign has been supporting schools to make the English Literature curriculum more inclusive of authors of colour. In the five years since Lit in Colour's launch, the proportion of GCSE students studying books by authors of colour has risen from 0.7 to 1.9%."We are encouraged by these signs of progress, but we believe the pace of change must be much greater. Our central recommendation is that every student in England should have the opportunity to study a book by an author of colour."Lit in Colour, Five-year progress report, January 2026 Download the full report and Lit in Colour's's recommendations here. |
