VIP Reading: Inspire children’s reading with high-quality texts and bringing authors into the classroom

February 22nd 2020

February 2020

When I was younger, I was a reluctant reader. The classroom texts I was exposed to just weren’t my cup of tea and the thought of the teacher asking me to read sent shivers down my spine. Fortunately for me, I had two parents in education who persevered until they found something I enjoyed reading. For me, it was the authors Roald Dahl and RL Stine who were the breakthrough.

Fast-forward 20 years, I can scarcely believe we have just launched our new VIP Reading website. Essentially, we are a small start-up with an eagerness to share a love of books with children. Our emphasis is on quality texts and bringing authors into the classroom. We empower teachers to feel more confident in the books they recommend.

How does VIP Reading actually inspire pupils to read?

VIP Reading has been hugely successful at my school, helping to transform attitudes towards reading and the sheer amount of books read. This academic year, my Y6 class have read an impressive 320 books so far. Recently, Ofsted visited the school and positively remarked about the successes of this programme in developing a love of reading. There are a number of other schools currently running VIP Reading and starting to also notice the benefits.

"VIP has helped me so much with my vocabulary in my writing. This has made me want to read a lot more. I always look forward to choosing another new book because there's so many to choose from. The books are very exciting and interesting. We are very lucky to have this in our school."
Louis, Lincoln

"VIP reading is a great mix of carefully chosen, high quality modern and classic texts which instil a real love for reading. It allows children to become lost in a book and experience the true meaning of reading for pleasure. As well as this, VIP Reading encourages talk and discussion around books and authors, raising the profile of reading without it being forced."
Hannah Ashton, Assistant Headteacher, Sheffield

Is it expensive to join?

A key element to VIP Reading is affordability. I started VIP Reading out of the frustration with the lack of resources to celebrate authors with my children, plus the fact that I wanted to be sure that children were actually reading. Click here to check out our affordable pricing.
