Summer Reading Challenge 2022

A graphic detailing the beginner reading challenge for the summer holidays

July 1st 2022

What amazing science and innovation exists around us? That's what the 2022 Summer Reading Challenge asks us to explore! Taking place online and at local libraries, this exciting programme of books, rewards and activities is the brainchild of The Reading Agency. Children are invited to join the fictional Gadgeteers and start exploring the science of the world they live in. So whether your pupils are budding chefs, aspiring astronauts or fearless travellers, join the adventure.

Tell me more!

The Summer Reading Challenge reaches over 700,000 children across the UK each year, encouraging them to read for pleasure over the summer holidays. It aims to improve reading skills and confidence for children between the ages of 4-11, plus address the regression in reading skills seen whilst children are out of school. Developed in collaboration with Science Museum Group, this year's innovative book lists features picture books, fiction, non-fiction, poetry and graphic novels, and has been curated by an expert panel of librarians, reading group leaders and teachers (and their children!) for different ages and abilities.

“Reading has such an important role to play in igniting young people’s curiosity about the world around them," says Susan Raikes, director of learning at Science Museum Group. "The Summer Reading Challenge this year provides a fantastic opportunity to reveal the science, engineering and innovation all around us. We are delighted that our partnership with the Reading Agency will allow us to reach more future creative thinkers and inspire them with the everyday wonders of imagination and discovery."
