We're thrilled to be joining forces with Oxford to support their Raise a Reader campaign, a new three-year initiative launched to help provide children and young people with the tools and opportunities to become lifelong readers in the wake of the pandemic. With the learning gap in children disproportionately affecting those from families with low socioeconomic backgrounds, it’s more important than ever that we ensure children and young people have the tools and opportunities they need to develop a love of reading.
For some children, school could be the only place that reading is nurtured; many don’t have books at home or have never seen their parents read. Oxford want to help change that. That's why they're pledging to support teachers, parents and carers help remove some of the barriers to reading for pleasure, and we're pleased to be able to work alongside Oxford on this. Our qualified teachers and librarians can offer tailored advice to Raise a Reader schools to help meet their reading requirements, from providing up-to-date reading schemes for schools, keeping your library and classroom book stock up-to-date, and tips on transforming your library with our free bespoke library design service.
We've also created brand new Raise a Reader book packs to support the initiative; designed to help you raise lifelong readers, the packs contain a selection of reads including leveled readers and reading books for pleasure, that are sure to get your pupils hooked. Available for Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2, each pack contains 50 books, from picture books to junior fiction and non-fiction, with some graphic novels included too (Key Stage 2).
The book packs for schools come with a Raise a Reader reading growth chart and book-themed goodies including activity sheets, bunting, bookmarks, and posters - all designed to help with developmental reading and writing.
If you're looking to overcome some of the barriers to reading for pleasure in your school, our qualified teachers, librarians and library design team can advise you on inspiring pupils to read for pleasure, updating your existing book stock or even how to create a new library in your school from scratch.

Oxford's Raise a Reader research report, Perceptions of reading: exploring barriers and opportunities shares the findings of their significant piece of research designed to inform our understanding of the important role we can all play in helping children become readers post-pandemic. It explores teacher and parent perspectives, uncovers the perceived barriers to reading, but also the many benefits to be gained.
