Pearson’s Bug Club Phonics revalidated by the DfE
May 3rd 2022
Pearson's Bug Club Phonics is one of the SSPs which has been revalidated by the DfE for phonics teaching in primary schools in 2022/23, helping children learn to read by the age of six in a fun accessible way. We hear more from the Pearson team.
In January 2022, the UK Department for Education announced that as of late February, there will be an increase in the number of validated primary phonics books and phonics programmes available to schools. This is to ensure that schools have a wide as possible choice of validated SSP programmes before the end of the 2021-22 financial year.
Bug Club Phonics has been revalidated by the DfE (Department of Education), offering schools a complete systematic synthetic phonics programme:
• Features daily lessons from the start of Reception
• Teaches the main grapheme-phoneme correspondences of English in a clearly defined, incremental sequence
• Gets children reading and spelling from very early on with phonics for key stage 1
• Includes blending for reading and segmenting for spelling activities
• Provides opportunities for children to practice and apply known phoneme-grapheme correspondences for spelling through dictation of sounds, words and sentences
• Features language sessions that teach ‘tricky’ common exception words
• Provides resources that support the teaching of lower-case and capital letters correctly, with clear start and finish points
• Includes direct teaching sessions, with extensive teacher-child interaction and involves a multi-sensory approach
• Has reading texts that closely match what has been taught up to that point
• Includes assessments and support for the lowest 20%
• Provides full guidance for teachers to support the effective delivery of the programme
• Provides remote learning capabilities via eBooks, allocated teaching screens and phonics games
New for 2022, Bug Club Phonics is publishing classroom resources such as phonics workbooks, flashcards, frieze cards, sound mats, guided reading activities, and posters all matched to its DfE-validated programme.
With the revalidation schools do not need to change the progression and programme they follow unless they want to, provided it produces good results.
With Bug Club Phonics you can be sure that your school has a proven, high quality phonics programme which meets the requirements of the reading framework from Ofsted and helps children to read by the age of six in a fun and accessible way.
