January 26th 2016
Hundreds of primary school children from across South and West Yorkshire have signed up to the latest reading challenge, One Million Minutes. The competition is run by award-winning education charity, Achievement for All, and lasts one whole week from Wednesday 27th January 2016.
The competition
The aim of the competition is to get more kids than ever reading the best in children's literature. Statistics show that a quarter of all children leave primary education without being able to read well, which is pretty shocking. Alas, there's a way to prove that statistic wrong, and it's by simply fitting in 10 minutes of reading every day - something Achievement for All is on a mission to reach. So far, the competition has been a major success, with over 24,443 children and 101 schools, from across the six regions, getting involved over the past 12 months. This is great news for everyone, especially the children who will really benefit from this extra reading time.
How to win
In order to win the big prize, your pupils will have to read like there's no tomorrow. And, to make sure you never miss a minute, children will be provided with special bookmarks so that they, you or their parents can log their reading minutes. To ensure your class wins, all you have to do is collate the class total every day, and log it into the One Million Minutes website. Plus, with the help of Achievement for All's special 'readometer', your pupils will also be able to see where they rank on the online leaderboard - great for a bit of competitive spirit!
The prize
There will be two winning classes, one from South Yorkshire and another from West Yorkshire. Each of the winning classes will be awarded with a reading corner for their school, with books of choice, worth over £1,000 - all courtesy of us! Just think, you and your pupils could have a brand new, luxury space, which will be perfect for when you each fancy relaxing with a good book.
