Research undertaken by the National Literacy Trust has found that First News, the UK’s only newspaper for young people, “significantly boosts pupils’ reading skills”. The Trust found that, after using the First News Reading Package for eight weeks, pupils showed positive changes in both reading attitudes and attainment. The Reading Package provides weekly differentiated resources including comprehensions, puzzles and a topical debate to encourage children to read a range of non-fiction material, and to discuss what they read. A subscription costs £299 for all the resources plus six copies of the paper each week, or £495 for 12 copies, (three copies for each year in KS2.) As an exclusive offer for Peters Books & Furniture customers, any school quoting PBN15 when subscribing to the Reading Package will get three free copies of the special edition In Focus – Space. For more information, visit the First News website at http://www.firstnews.co.uk/forschools/welcome/subscribe or call 01795 592946. Be sure to quote PBN15.
“My pupils LOVE First News - cries of 'Yes!' erupt when I bring the new issue into the classroom. It's such a useful guided reading resource and the children are so keen to read the newspaper. They have become really interested in current affairs and I regularly use articles in the paper as discussion points across the curriculum.” Carly Blythe, teacher
