You name it – there’s war, refugees, racism, mental health and even environmental issues covered in this gritty longlist. The Carnegie longlist is on the most part not for the fainthearted or younger readers, on the whole, but don’t despair; these books deal with these issues subtly, adeptly and with warmth and empathy, giving readers an insight into other people, places and struggles to help them comprehend the world around them. Peters favourite Frank Cottrell-Boyce’s Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth caters to younger readers, as does Ross Welford’s Time Travelling with a Hamster and Brian Selznick’s Carnegie and Greenaway longlisted title The Marvels. The Greenaway longlist is, as expected, decidedly less gritty. You’ll find nature, a menagerie of animals, and family in all its forms on the list, with a special mention to Flying Eye publisher for its three longlisted titles! Previous winner William Grill is nominated for The Wolves of Currumpaw, and Carnegie & Greenaway superstar Chris Riddell of course finds himself back on the list with his illustrations for poetry collection A Great Big Cuddle. Graphic novel Alpha and The Journey echo the refugee themes from the Carnegie list, but there’s also comedy in A Beginner’s Guide to Bearspotting and non-fiction in The Great Fire of London.
