CILIP confirm Green Libraries Week for October 2025

April 14th 2025

Taking place from Monday 27 October–Sunday 2 November 2025, Green Libraries Week celebrates libraries with a focus on the climate and sustainability.

Green Libraries Week will be established as a separate public engagement campaign and sector initiative taking place each October, and CILIP are encouraging all UK libraries to start planning green activities for their local area. 2025 will also see the return of the Green Libraries Conference.

Looking for inspiration? We’ve included a few environmentally-friendly examples from our library customers below.

No more plastic jackets?

Last year alone, Peters supplied enough PVC jackets to fill five double-decker buses! But in an innovative new trial, libraries in Stockport and Swansea are now going plastic-free, with few to no ill effects. Could you do the same?

The Green Library, Hampshire

Last year Hampshire County Council launched their first ‘Green Library’, transforming Bridgemary Library in Gosport to showcase how libraries can reduce their impact on the environment, and engage with the public in new and different ways.

A space for the whole community to learn about nature and our changing climate, not only was the building was upgraded to reduce energy use by installing cavity wall insulation, new double glazing, window screens and LED lighting, they also installed a secret garden that’s a haven for nature and the local community.

South Gloucestershire Libraries' Story Garden project

This Spring, South Gloucestershire Libraries are launching a project to improve and revamp their library gardens, creating inviting spaces for children, ideal for activities such as outdoor storytelling sessions, story-walks and nature trails.

The project ties in neatly with this year’s Summer Reading Challenge theme, Story Garden, providing the perfect ideal opportunity to use these garden areas to promote reading and share the enjoyment of books and stories.
