Ysgol Cefnllys

May 23rd 2025

On a tight budget for many years, Ysgol Cefnllys’ previous library was in real need of a refresh. The Friends of the school had been working tirelessly to raise funds for a brand-new library that would develop pupils’ love of reading, creating a reading for pleasure culture through imagination and storytelling. Our Interior Design team were happy to help!

A rural primary school for pupils aged 4–11, Ysgol Cefnllys in Llandridnod Wells has a higher-than-average proportion of pupils with learning difficulties, as well as a high percentage of pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL), and free school meals (FSM). They needed their new library to provide support for emerging readers, as well as a focus on topic-based learning.

Friendly and welcoming

To appeal to the school's reluctant readers, Peters' Senior Interior Designer Helena used a bright and fresh modern colour scheme, featuring a calming blue colour palette contrasted with dark turquoise to provide depth. She also incorporated foam board murals featuring the school's core-purpose characters, to make the space friendly and welcoming.

Wow factor

Our popular statement archway creates an eye-catching focal point connecting the two reading zones together, giving Ysgol Cefnllys's library the 'wow-factor' it deserves. Shelving throughout is from our Apto range, which provides flexibility for forward facing and spine-facing displays – known to improve pupil engagement. The library's large right-hand wall features taller shelving to hold the majority of the books, while book display units allow for focused displays throughout.

In the corridors, book trees add visual interest as well as providing opportunities for for themed book displays such as author spotlights.

The impact

Ysgol Cefnllys launched their new library with a grand opening on World Book Day earlier this year! Since the launch, they have seen a renewed interest in reading amongst the pupils.

Pupils love spending time in the new library space, both individually and in groups. The library is now a well-organised space, with lots of display areas and topic-related shelves. The school have also purchased books in other languages to encourage pupils from a wide range of cultural backgrounds to take an interest in their own and their peers' culture, language and heritage.

"We have seen an increase in pupils showing a renewed interest in books and reading. The space is inviting and welcoming for pupils of all ages. It was such a smooth process from start to finish and we would highly recommend Peters to any school."
