Let’s make a difference one book at a time

November 9th, 2016

Are you concerned about worldwide literacy levels? According to the latest UNESCO statistics on global literacy, 14.7% of adults (aged 15 years and older) and 9.4% of youths (aged 15 – 24 years) are illiterate. At Better World Books (BWB), they are committed to helping provide better lives and a chance for economic, social and political freedom through literacy. As a global bookstore, their mission is to harness the power of capitalism to bring literacy and opportunity to people around the world. They achieve this through partnering with literacy charities, such as the National Literacy Trust, Room to Read as well as us here at Peters.

BWB collect pre-loved books and list them for sale online across 11 different marketplaces as well as www.betterworldbooks.co.uk. For every book sold, a percentage of the sale goes to literacy and any books that cannot be sold are donated, or recycled – no books go to landfill! It may be a simple approach to improving global literacy, but it has been very impactful. Since their founding in the UK in late 2008, BWB has reused, donated or recycled over 28 million books and raised over £2.45 million for literacy and libraries.

Your books can help change the world too! If your school, library or organisation has books that it no longer needs, or you would like to run a book drive to support literacy, BWB can help. They’ll provide you with internal or external book banks, shipping boxes and will get the books collected, all for free!

Through the sale of the books, you can choose to support one of BWB’s 5 literacy partners or a literacy charity of your choice. You can also choose to support the Better World Books Literacy Fund, which provides annual grants to support literacy projects. The Better World Books Literacy Grants are now in their third year and have so far provided over £38,000 to 25 projects that promote and improve literacy in their communities. You can read about the recipients here.

If you would like to sign up or find out more please email BWB or telephone 01383 431124. In every case, Better World Books are making a difference together one book at a time!
